When Katie e-mailed to say everyone would be in town for her grandmother’s funeral, and would I be able to do a family portrait? I was sad. I thought of an image I had taken during her wedding five years earlier, of three generations of women in her family. I remembered her grandmother as a beautiful, classy lady. Such a loss.
Yet while I was sorry a funeral had brought them together, I was also happy to see how this beautiful family is growing. Sisters talking as if a lifelong conversation has just resumed, babies squealing and sleeping on laps, kids running and playing. It was a day to celebrate family, and to take comfort in the people most dear to us. Here are some of my favorite images from this bittersweet day…
