Sometimes I meet a couple, and it becomes apparent throughout the day that they’ve done some serious living. They’ve been through good things, and bad things, and it changed them. There is a look around the eyes, at the corner of a smile, that lets you know–if you’re looking–they they’ve gotten to the other side, and they’re not sweating the little stuff anymore. Maybe it’s gratitude I’m sensing. There was definitely a sense of deep gratitude about Liz and Mike–gratitude for their lives. For their family and friends. Gratitude for each other.
It was almost as if they had made up their minds at some other point in their lives that Love like this wasn’t for them. They could get by just fine on their own, thank you very much.
But then they discovered each other, and the sheer unexpected surpise of it all resulted in an abiding delight and wonder.
Joy. Maybe I’m just noticing the components of joy. Whatever it is, it’s beautiful to be around. Beautiful to photograph. And it allowed me to be nearly invisible as I shot and shot and shot–at St. Mark’s Catholic church, at the Cultural Gardens, on East 4th Street, and finally during their outdoor summer reception at The Glidden House.
