Cleveland Museum of Art wedding photographer

This photo, taken during the bride and groom portrait session at the Cleveland Museum of Art, might look like one of the easiest images in this whole gallery. Two people laughing together, comfortable, natural. And that's exactly the point — because getting a couple to look this at ease in front of a camera is rarely as simple as it looks.

This is what I mean when I talk about relaxed candid portraiture. It's not a fully posed shot, and it's not a grab-and-go candid either. It's the space between: enough direction to get the light and composition right, enough room for the couple to be themselves and react to each other. That balance doesn't happen by accident.

Getting here takes real planning — going over the day's timeline with the couple ahead of time, reading their energy in the moment, knowing when to give direction and when to step back and let them just talk to each other. It also takes building enough trust that two people who might feel awkward or self-conscious in front of a camera can actually forget it's there for a second. And underneath all of that, there's the technical side: getting the exposure, the focus, and the framing right in real time, with the background softly blurred behind them so nothing pulls attention away from their faces.

Part of my job is making all of that invisible. A photo like this looks effortless; but there's a lot of craft behind it.
