Bridal Portraits on the East Bank of the Flats

This portrait was taken on the East Bank of the Flats, not far from Alley Cat Oyster Bar, during the couple's portrait session โ€” the last stretch of the day's photo timeline before everyone headed off to the reception.

This wedding followed a first-look structure, which I love for exactly moments like this one. The bride and groom saw each other privately before the ceremony, which meant that by the time we got to the East Bank, all the formal portraits with the wedding party were already done, and we had this relaxed, unhurried window just for bride and groom shots. There's a completely different energy to portraits taken this late in the sequence โ€” everyone's settled in, the nerves from earlier in the day are gone, and you get genuine smiles instead of camera-shy ones.

The Flats gave us this great mix of greenery and that soft, blurred industrial backdrop of the city behind her โ€” you can just make out the brick and steel structures across the water, completely out of focus, which keeps all the attention on her without losing the sense of place. Her bouquet, with those warm oranges and deep purples against the lace of her dress, popped beautifully against all that green.

Technically, I shot this with a wide aperture to really separate her from the background, letting the city and river dissolve into soft color and light while keeping her expression and the intricate lace detailing on her dress completely sharp.
