This looks like a quiet moment, but it really wasn't. The room was full — bridesmaids everywhere, the mother of the bride hovering close, everyone watching her every move as she finished getting into her dress. This was captured during the getting-ready portion of the day at Kirtland Country Club in Willoughby, right in the middle of all that noise and energy, while she paused to adjust her sleeves.
She'd already stepped into her dress and was making a final adjustment to her detachable lace sleeves — that delicate, fingerless style that runs from the wrist almost all the way to the shoulder, leaving the hands free while still giving the arms this soft, romantic texture. I love this particular style because it photographs beautifully in getting-ready shots like this one; there's something about the way the lace catches the light that feels both vintage and current at the same time.
That floral drapery framing her on both sides adds color and texture without competing with her, and the window behind her gave me the kind of soft, diffused morning light I cherish during getting ready — a gentle glow along her collarbone and the side of her face.
What I really love about this shot is that even with a full room of people watching her, she was completely in her own head for a second — focused entirely on her sleeve, tuning out the chaos around her. That contrast is what makes it feel so quiet, even though it absolutely wasn't.
I shot this wide open to pull the floral drapery into a soft blur, letting it read as color and shape rather than distracting detail, while keeping her expression and the delicate lace texture sharp.
